Journal Changes for 2022
Posted On: Tuesday, January 18, 2022 - 23:37 by Beverly Murphy

Several changes are coming to the to the journal collections at Duke.

Duke University libraries have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. Negotiations are still underway, but we expect that there will be journal cancellations and other changes starting in early 2022. These large "Big Deal" packages of journals function something like a cable or streaming package, where many titles are included for one annual sum and continued access is contingent on continued subscription. We are making changes to both packages and directly-subscribed titles based on data for journal usage, impact, and costs with goals to meet research needs, maximize budgets, and foster a sustainable scholarly…

Preprints Now Available in Embase!
Posted On: Wednesday, January 5, 2022 - 10:20 by Lesley Skalla, Ph.D.

Embase has ventured into the world of preprints by now providing article preprints from medRXiv and bioRXiv.

Preprints are early versions of manuscripts that are shared on public preprint servers prior to peer review and publication.

The benefit to you is earlier access to biomedical information including randomized controlled trials which might be included for systematic reviews as grey literature. Keep in mind that preprints are not peer-reviewed and therefore should be used with caution.

Embase clearly identifies an article as a preprint on the publication record. When doing searches, you can…

Changes to the E-Journals Page
Posted On: Saturday, December 11, 2021 - 16:02 by Beverly Murphy

Effective December 16, all links to E-journals will take you to a search for E-Journals on all subjects and disciplines and not just those for the Medical Center Library & Archives. This is similar to searching for e-journals in the library catalog which includes resources for all the libraries across Duke. During this transition, we welcome your feedback, comments and questions at mclibrary-collections@duke.edu.

Journal Impact Factor News
Posted On: Wednesday, November 10, 2021 - 10:32 by Margaret Graton

Did you notice a jump in the Journal Citations Report Impact Factor for one of your favorite journals this year? If so, good catch!

Journal Impact Factor calculations depend on the calendar year of publication. For journals that still publish in print, Clarivate traditionally used the print publication date to determine the year of publication. However, in the past 20 years, various models of online publication (early view, advance access, accepted articles) have been introduced. Typically, these online articles are citable with a stable DOI, weeks to months before they appear in a print issue, but have not been counted in the Journal Impact Factor until their print publication date.

For 2021, Clarivate has changed the game.
