The new NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy went into effect on January 25, 2023! This means that if you are submitting a NIH grant application that will produce scientific data, you now need to include a 1-2 page data management plan that describes the type and format of data you plan to collect or produce and how you will share and preserve it. At the time of the grant application, you will now need to plan for how you are going to manage and share your data. To support you with this process, we have provided a list helpful resources.

If your research will be NIH-funded, you will need to include a data management and sharing (DMS) plan with your grant application as of January 25, 2023. You can use the NIH optional DMS Plan format page to create your plan, but why not take advantage of the free, online DMPTool managed by the California Digital Library?  DMPTool provides a click-through wizard that walks you through the DMP creation process using an NIH template along with helpful guidance from both NIH and Duke.

Did you know that your peer-reviewed publications from NIH-funded grants must be deposited into PubMed Central (PMC) upon acceptance of publication and made available to the public in PMC within 12 months of publication?  This is the requirement of the NIH Public Access Policy, which mandates that the public has access to published results of your NIH-funded research.

The Duke University Libraries will no longer support the Sciwheel citation management tool. Access will end on June 30, 2022.

If you are a Sciwheel user, you can choose to export your files easily from Sciwheel as a .RIS file into other citation management tools, such as Zotero and EndNote. Sciwheel has created easy step-by-step instructions on how to export your citations.

Authors who want to publish an article in an open access journal or publish in a standard subscription journal as an open access article, typically need to pay an "article processing charge" (APC) in order to cover the cost of publishing by the publisher. Duke University Libraries, including the Medical Center Library & Archives, now have a "Read and Publish" agreement, also known as a "transformative agreement," with Cambridge University Press(CUP) so Duke researchers can publish articles open access at no cost in specific journals covered by this agreement. In October of 2020, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced its new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy. Beginning in January 2023, this policy will require that all NIH researchers prospectively plan for how their scientific data and accompanying metadata will be preserved and shared by submitting a Data Management and Sharing Plan in their grant applications. There are several changes to Duke's journal subscriptions for 2022. Library staff across Duke have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with publishers Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley that were up for regular renewal, with an eye toward containing excessive annual increases for journal prices. When reviewing specific journal titles, we examined several variables, including usage data, journal price, article cost-per-use, journal Impact Factor, and the number of articles by Duke researchers in the journal.

Several changes are coming to the to the journal collections at Duke.

Duke University libraries have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. Negotiations are still underway, but we expect that there will be journal cancellations and other changes starting in early 2022. These large "Big Deal" packages of journals function something like a cable or streaming package, where many titles are included for one annual sum and continued access is contingent on continued subscription. Did you notice a jump in the Journal Citations Report Impact Factor for one of your favorite journals this year? If so, good catch!

Journal Impact Factor calculations depend on the calendar year of publication. For journals that still publish in print, Clarivate traditionally used the print publication date to determine the year of publication. However, in the past 20 years, various models of online publication (early view, advance access, accepted articles) have been introduced. Typically, these online articles are citable with a stable DOI, weeks to months before they appear in a print issue, but have not been counted in the Journal Impact Factor until their print publication date.
