We have recently implemented a new library system, and there are some changes that might affect your experience using our library resources as a result. 

One of these changes is our e-journals interface. With the new system, our e-journals interface looks significantly different. All of the content you are used to seeing remains available in this new interface, and you are still able to search for e-journals from our library website.

There are several changes to Duke's journal subscriptions for 2022. Library staff across Duke have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with publishers Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley that were up for regular renewal, with an eye toward containing excessive annual increases for journal prices. When reviewing specific journal titles, we examined several variables, including usage data, journal price, article cost-per-use, journal Impact Factor, and the number of articles by Duke researchers in the journal.

Several changes are coming to the to the journal collections at Duke.

Duke University libraries have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. Negotiations are still underway, but we expect that there will be journal cancellations and other changes starting in early 2022. These large "Big Deal" packages of journals function something like a cable or streaming package, where many titles are included for one annual sum and continued access is contingent on continued subscription. Effective December 16, all links to E-journals will take you to a search for E-Journals on all subjects and disciplines and not just those for the Medical Center Library & Archives. This is similar to searching for e-journals in the library catalog which includes resources for all the libraries across Duke. This year we transitioned to a new e-journals platform which resulted in a few access issues for our e-journals page, but they have now been resolved.

There is however a change in the process for authentication purposes. If you access our e-journals page from off-site, you now have to log-in with your DukeNet ID and password. On-site access is not affected.

ClinicalKey is an online search tool for e-books, journals, Procedures Consult, First Consult, surgical Vitals and other clinical information. ClinicalKey provides access to more than 1,000 e-books in medicine and surgery and evidence-based content to help nurses find answers to clinical questions at the point of care.

Effective April 25th, our e-journals platform switched over to the current EBSCO platform, which is the same as what we use for our metasearch engine, SmartSearch.

To navigate this new page:

• Type in the name of the journal or a significant word from the journal title (does not have to be case sensitive). The system will pick up all journal titles with that word as part of the title. Note: The word may also appear or be mapped to other fields in the record (eg. journal description, publisher information, etc). The former alphabetical (A-Z)…
