Several changes are coming to the to the journal collections at Duke.

Duke University libraries have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. Negotiations are still underway, but we expect that there will be journal cancellations and other changes starting in early 2022. These large "Big Deal" packages of journals function something like a cable or streaming package, where many titles are included for one annual sum and continued access is contingent on continued subscription. This is similar to searching for e-journals in the library catalog which includes resources for all the libraries across Duke. Did you notice a jump in the Journal Citations Report Impact Factor for one of your favorite journals this year? If so, good catch!

Journal Impact Factor calculations depend on the calendar year of publication. For journals that still publish in print, Clarivate traditionally used the print publication date to determine the year of publication. However, in the past 20 years, various models of online publication (early view, advance access, accepted articles) have been introduced. Typically, these online articles are citable with a stable DOI, weeks to months before they appear in a print issue, but have not been counted in the Journal Impact Factor until their print publication date.

COVID-19 has changed and disrupted our lives, at Duke and around the world. On campus, most students have returned home, classes are online, and all events are cancelled. Many staff are working from home; others that are deemed essential continue to work on campus. The hospital is preparing for an influx of people infected with COVID-19. Duke researchers are trying to find ways to fight the disease, from identifying treatments to creating better protective equipment.

And we all live with the fear of the physical impact of the virus, both for ourselves and our families.
