Transgender Day of Remembrance
Posted On: Wednesday, November 20, 2024 - 08:12 by Hope Riffee
November 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This yearly observance honors the memory of transgender people who were killed due to transphobic violence. TDOR was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.
GLAAD has a yearly memoriam of those who have been lost to anti-transgender violence over the years here.

Digital Resource Spotlight: Intercom
Posted On: Tuesday, November 19, 2024 - 11:18 by Rebecca Williams
The Medical Center Archives is always happy to welcome researchers to view materials in our reading room, but we recognize that it is not always possible for everyone to visit our physical location! The Archives has a variety of online resources to help users learn about the collections and the Medical Center’s history. One particularly great resource that we would like to highlight is digitized issues of Intercom.
Duke Medicine’s primary news publication from 1953 to 1986, the Intercom featured information about campus construction and events, faculty and staff news, facts and figures, and articles about medical research and innovations at Duke. The first 25 years of the publication were digitized by the…

Galloping Good Times: Lola and Kiwi at the Library!
Posted On: Monday, November 18, 2024 - 13:54 by Hope Riffee
On November 6th, the Medical Center Library was filled with joy and excitement as we welcomed back Stampede of Love and their beloved miniature horses, Lola and Kiwi! With over 400 attendees joining us, the atmosphere was lively and full of smiles as everyone had the chance to meet these adorable equine friends.
Attendees enjoyed taking photos with Lola and Kiwi, creating unforgettable memories. To add to the fun, we also had mini horse buttons (from our new button maker!) that everyone loved, making the day even more special.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support this event! We can’t wait to see you again for more hoof-tapping fun in the future!

Getting Published
Posted On: Thursday, November 7, 2024 - 11:46 by Lesley Skalla, Ph.D.
Choosing a journal to publish your research can be stressful, especially if you are new to the publishing process. The Medical Center Library has a few tips to get you started.
Decide Early
Our first suggestion is to decide where you are going to submit your article early in the writing process. Even better, decide where you might publish as you are planning your research study! You will want to make sure the journal is a good fit for your research and understand what their expectations are for your research and the manuscript.
Some journals only publish specific types of articles and often will have specific reporting requirements that you need to consider early on in the writing process.
- Will you need to register a protocol?
