It’s that time of year again—hearts, valentines, and… data! Love Data Week is an international celebration held each year during the week of Valentine’s Day. The event brings together universities, nonprofits, government agencies, corporations, and individuals to explore data related topics through programs and activities.

This year’s theme, “Where’s the Data?”, highlights the journey of data from collection to storage and long term preservation.

Live for Life will be at the Library's 212E conference room on Thursday, Nov 20th from 10am-4pm offering a Health Assessment. These are a free, confidential health screening provided through Duke benefits. It includes total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, BMI, waist circumference height, weight and body mass index measurements. Additionally, there is a goal setting and referral session with a nurse, dietitian, or fitness specialist. Many participants find the coaching session helps them get started making lifestyle changes and connects them to LIVE FOR LIFE and community resources to support them. Health Assessments are available to all active Duke employees.

November 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This yearly observance honors the memory of transgender people who were killed due to transphobic violence. TDOR was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Happy Veterans Day! On this day, we honor the service of all military veterans in the United States Armed Forces. Currently at Duke, approximately 2,200 employees and 450 students identify as military veterans.

October is National Medical Librarians Month.

This is the perfect opportunity to pause and celebrate the contributions of the people at the medical library. We curate reliable and trustworthy information resources, making them easier to find and use. We capture and provide research into the history of the institution. We leverage technologies to simplify systems and tools. We design spaces that inspire, connect, and support. We teach in the classroom and at the point of need. We find the seemingly unfindable piece of information.

I am frequently asked which of our many resources is “the best.” While we do have fantastic book collections, clinical reference tools, and e-journals, there is no contest: our best resource is our staff.

The beloved miniature horses from Stampede of Love are galloping their way back to the Medical Center Library on November 5th from 12pm to 2pm! These pint-sized ponies are ready to offer a moment of calm, connection, and joy in the middle of your busy day.

Stop by to say hello, take a photo, and enjoy a little stress relief with our four-legged guests. Whether you’re a longtime fan or meeting them for the first time, it’s a great opportunity to pause and recharge.
