Uyen Nguyen is the most recent addition to our staff at the Medical Center Library. She was born in the city of Hanoi in Vietnam. Growing up, Uyen always knew she wanted a job that would allow her to support people in a service-related field. After moving to the U.S. at 16, she began to think more about what her career path might be.
During the pandemic, Uyen used much of the initial lockdown time for self-reflection and gaining perspective. She explored opportunities in national nonprofit fields and considered whether her path might lead abroad or keep her stateside. While working at the Goucher College Library, she quickly realized how much she enjoyed this line of work. Not long after, she saw a job posting here at the Duke Medical Center Library and applied.
In her role as Electronic Resources and Discovery Librarian, Uyen is truly doing what she always hoped—helping and supporting others in a service-oriented role.
Since moving to Durham, she has been impressed by the city’s diversity and the wide variety of things to do both in town and on campus. Her only “con” is the limited transportation options—it can be difficult to get around without a vehicle compared to other places. She appreciates Duke’s hybrid work schedule and the flexibility the Library provides to support learning and research within library technical services.
Outside of work, Uyen enjoys knitting and has recently been experimenting with new yarns and patterns. She also enjoys playing video games—especially ones like BioShock. Something most people wouldn’t know: Uyen speaks three languages fluently and can understand or communicate in seven!
Please stop by and say hi to Uyen when you visit us!
