As of June 1, ClinicalKey for Nursing (including Clinical Skills)  has been cancelled. Two new products have been purchased (Lippincott Advisor and Lippincott Procedures) which expand on the functions of this database and offer additional resources for practicing nurses.

Beverly Murphy, MLS, AHIP, FMLA, began her term as President-Elect of the Medical Library Association (MLA) in May at the end of the annual conference in Seattle, WA.  Elected in December 2016 by the MLA members, she will serve as President from 2018 to 2019. Her election to this office is also a milestone for the Association since she will be the first African-American President of MLA. Bad grammar might distract readers from an otherwise good paper or make your work more difficult to read and comprehend. On the other hand, good writing may make an otherwise bad paper appear better than it is. 

Here are some explanations for a few common mistakes in scientific writing: 

• Incorrectly writing units or incorrectly using hyphens
• Use hyphens with adjectives. My camera has a 24-mm lens, but the lens is 24 mm. 
• Remember to put a space between the number and unit if there isn't a hyphen.
• The not-so-simple instructions were not so helpful.

Then when viewing an article, click the green tab for open access that automatically appears on the right side of the browser when an open access version is available.

ClinicalKey is an online search tool for e-books, journals, Procedures Consult, First Consult, surgical Vitals and other clinical information. ClinicalKey provides access to more than 1,000 e-books in medicine and surgery and evidence-based content to help nurses find answers to clinical questions at the point of care.

Ever get nervous about formatting citations? Here’s an overview of a few common issues when citing journal articles in often-used styles (APA, AMA, and Chicago)

In most cases, you can easily export citation information from databases like PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, etc. into a reference management system like EndNote. However, you have to be careful about how that data is entered to ensure that your final citations are correct.

PubMed’s My NCBI tool allows you to set personal preferences, store both search strategies and citation collections, and create alerts by offering automatic e-mail updates and RSS Feeds of stored searches. Register for My NCBI by creating a User Name and Password. The preferred method of creating a My NCBI account is to register for it by clicking the "Register for an NCBI account" on the My NCBI sign in page and following the instructions.

Do you access UpToDate through Maestro Care?

Users accessing UpToDate through the Maestro Care toolbar or through a patient's chart (problem list, MAR, orders, etc.) will have immediate access to other evidence-based resources, including ACP Journal Club, the Cochrane Library, ClinicalKey, ClinicalKey for Nursing, Lexicomp, MedlinePlus (for patients), and PubMed.

When you click on the UpToDate button, searches should still work the same way and users’ Maestro Care IDs will still be sent to UpToDate for automatic log-in to receive CME credit for searches.
