Reporting Guidelines for Studies
Posted On: Thursday, October 13, 2022 - 12:34 by Sarah Cantrell (she/her/hers)

Starting a new research project without a reporting guideline can feel daunting – a bit like driving without Google Maps. You may have a vague sense of where to go and what you need to do, but the details and street names are a bit hazy.

Thankfully, numerous "roadmaps" for health research studies exist. The EQUATOR Network has helpfully gathered these reporting guidelines all in one convenient location and includes reporting guidelines for case reports (CARE), quality improvement studies (SRQR), observational studies (STROBE), randomized controlled trials (CONSORT), and systematic reviews (PRISMA), among others.

The…

NIH Public Access Policy Compliance Revisited
Posted On: Monday, July 18, 2022 - 10:27 by Lesley Skalla, Ph.D.

Did you know that your peer-reviewed publications from NIH-funded grants must be deposited into PubMed Central (PMC) upon acceptance of publication and made available to the public in PMC within 12 months of publication?  This is the requirement of the NIH Public Access Policy, which mandates that the public has access to published results of your NIH-funded research.

Here are some tips for ensuring that you are in compliance!

  1. As soon as your manuscript is published, ensure that it is submitted to PubMed Central. There are many options to do this, and it usually depends on the journal where your work is published. Sometimes the journal will do it for…

Transformative Agreement with Cambridge University Press
Posted On: Friday, February 25, 2022 - 22:26 by Lesley Skalla, Ph.D.

Authors who want to publish an article in an open access journal or publish in a standard subscription journal as an open access article, typically need to pay an "article processing charge" (APC) in order to cover the cost of publishing by the publisher. Duke University Libraries, including the Medical Center Library & Archives, now have a "Read and Publish" agreement, also known as a "transformative agreement," with Cambridge University Press(CUP) so Duke researchers can publish articles open access at no cost in specific journals covered by this agreement. In addition, users will have access to CUP's journal content. To find out what CUP journals fall under this agreement, use CUP’s…

Journals for 2022: List of Cancellations & Additions
Posted On: Saturday, February 5, 2022 - 09:40 by Megan Von Isenburg

There are several changes to Duke's journal subscriptions for 2022. Library staff across Duke have been working together to renegotiate large "Big Deal" packages with publishers Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley that were up for regular renewal, with an eye toward containing excessive annual increases for journal prices. When reviewing specific journal titles, we examined several variables, including usage data, journal price, article cost-per-use, journal Impact Factor, and the number of articles by Duke researchers in the journal.

While these cancellations will mean that the journals will no longer be available for immediate access at Duke, journal articles not available through university subscriptions can be requested through our
