Our favorite library spaces

Our library offers a variety of spaces to suit every patron’s needs. Some are well known, and some are hidden treasures! We strive to make our library a versatile, welcoming environment—and we hope you find a study spot that fits your needs.

Our staff wanted to show you their favorite spaces to read, nap, study, and meal plan…

Bar-style seating overlooking the Medicine Pavilion Quad on the 3rd floor of the library

Hoping to read while overlooking a busy campus quad?

Check out our open bar-style seating on the 3rd floor! Our Digital Projects Analyst, Hope, says it’s a great spot to read, daydream about fall fun, and observe the Medicine Pavilion Quad. As a bonus, the 3rd floor is our quiet zone—perfect for focused reading and reflection.

Velvet couch and local art inside the Reading Room on Level 1

In the mood to nap… or study… on a velvet couch next to local art?

Beth, one of our Research & Education Librarians, recommends our retro open seating area in the Reading Room on Level 1! Warning: the couch is dangerously cozy. While you’re there, enjoy the woven tapestry by Silvia Heyden.

Airplane chairs on Level 2 of the library, ideal for reading or studying

Looking for a quiet place to learn all about North Carolina BBQ?

Our Research & Education Intern, Aaliyah, suggests grabbing Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue and relaxing in our “airplane” chairs on Level 2. These comfy chairs are perfect for unwinding or studying in style.

Richmond House Room with cozy leather chair inside the Reading Room

Wishing the library had a big, cozy leather chair in an 18th-century English estate?

Good news—it does! Visit the Richmond House Room. Beth calls it the coziest spot for reading, studying, or Zooming. Located within our Reading Room, it’s open for drop-in use Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Medical Garden terrace with medicinal herbs and seating area

Hoping to plan your next dinner party menu while surrounded by herbs?

We love our Medical Garden! Aaliyah finds it inspiring for dreaming up meal and drink ideas. The garden sits on the terrace on the north side of Seeley Mudd, facing Duke Hospital—perfect for connecting botany and medicine.

If those don’t fit your needs, explore our many other individual and group study spaces across all three floors. Find more at Study & Meeting Rooms. There’s always something new to discover!
