Have you ever struggled to keep track of your publications or differentiate your work from others with similar names? ORCID, a global non-profit organization, is here to help, offering a unique digital identifier that ensures you are always connected to your research and that it is always correctly attributed.
What is ORCID?
ORCID (pronounced ORKID or ORK ID) provides unique identifiers designed to distinguish authors across the publishing landscape. By adding and configuring your ORCID to your scholarly profile, you can automatically push updates to and from various data sources, making your life easier.
Benefits of ORCID
- Universal Identifier: Your ORCID iD is not restricted to any one institution or database. You will keep the same ORCID iD throughout your career.
- Integration in Research Workflows: ORCID is now integrated into many key research workflows, such as manuscript and grant submissions.
- Publisher and Funder Requirements: Many publishers and funders require authors to have ORCID iDs to manage information in their systems. For example:
- NSF has required ORCID iDs for all key personnel on proposal submissions since Fall 2023.
- NIH plans to require ORCID iDs in the near future (original May 25, 2025 implementation date postponed)
- Seamless Login: ORCID allows you to seamlessly log in to publisher and database websites, streamlining access to your research and submission processes.
How to Get Your ORCID iD
Getting your unique ORCID identifier is simple and takes only 30 seconds to register! You can then link your ID to other identifiers, such as those found in Scopus, Duke Directory, Scholars@Duke, and LinkedIn. You will need to use your verified Duke email address but we also recommend adding your personal email address for backup and continuity for if/when you leave Duke.
Forgot Your ORCID iD?
If you have already registered for ORCID but have forgotten your iD, you can search for your name on the ORCID homepage.
