How to find a full-text article

With numerous databases and thousands of journals, locating the full-text article can sometimes be a challenge! In this post, we will offer several tips and strategies for connecting you to full-text articles.

First things first: Always access resources through the Library Website
An important step is to make sure that you access our databases (e.g., PubMed, CINAHL) and our journals via our library website so that these resources recognize your connection to and affiliation with Duke.

How do I access full-text articles when searching databases?
When you connect to a database like PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science (and others!) and conduct a search to locate literature, each citation will offer a blue GetIt@Duke button. In PubMed, for example, you'll need to click on the relevant article's title in order to see this link to the right of the citation and abstract.

This GetIt@Duke button will initiate a search across our many collections and journal subscriptions to connect you to the full-text article. If you click the GetIt@Duke button and it doesn't take you to the article but rather to a page letting you know that we don't have the full-text but you can request it, be sure to click the second option to request the article as a Med Center User via our interlibrary loan service. This service is no charge to you! Learn more about our interlibrary loan service in this related news post

I have an article citation. What is the best way to find the full-text article?
When you have an article citation and want to see if we have it in our collections, the best bet is to use the Duke Libraries Search Widget. Simply enter the article title into the search box and click search! If we have the article, you'll be presented with options to obtain the full-text.

I'm still having trouble – are there other steps I can take?
Feel free to reach out to use via chat Monday-Friday from 9am-5 pm, or send an email to medical-librarian@duke.edu! Alternatively, if you are sure we don't have the article, you can place an interlibrary loan request. Learn more about this service and placing a request in our related news post

What about LibKey Nomad? Will that help me locate full-text articles?
Yes! This browser extension integrates with our library’s electronic resources to get you to the full-text faster. LibKey Nomad will notify you when an article is available through the library.
