Using Vivli to Meet NIH Data Management Requirements

If you are a NIH-funded researcher working with human participant data and are seeking a controlled-access repository to comply with the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy, consider Vivli as a data repository option.

Vivli is a secure, online platform designed for sharing anonymized, individual participant-level data from clinical trials as well as data from observational studies. The platform includes a controlled access data repository, search engine, and secure research environment.

As one of seven generalist repositories in the NIH Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (or GREI), Vivli is part of the NIH data ecosystem. It meets all of NIH’s Desirable Characteristics for Data Repositories, including assigning DOIs to datasets to ensure they are both findable and citable. Access to deposited datasets is managed by Vivli through a formal approval process, saving researchers valuable time.

Vivli at Duke University

Duke University School of Medicine is an institutional member of Vivli, allowing Duke researchers to deposit up to 500 GB of data at no cost. Vivli currently hosts over 7,700 clinical trials, including seven datasets contributed by Duke researchers.

Planning to Share Your Data in Vivli?

If you plan to use Vivli for sharing NIH-funded data, start planning early!  You can request Vivli-specific guidance for your Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) by completing a short form. Vivli will provide customizable exemplary language that you can adapt for your DMSP.

While deposit costs are covered for Duke researchers (up to 500 GB), keep in mind that as only anonymized data can be deposited in Vivli, you will need to budget for data de-identification and anonymization.
