Duke University was established in 1924 when James B. Duke, through the Indenture of Trust, designated a gift that transformed Trinity College into a comprehensive research university. An additional bequest of his established the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and Duke Hospital in 1925, and in 1927. Noted pediatrician Wilburt Davison of Johns Hopkins University was named Duke medical school’s first dean. November 20th is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This yearly observance honors the memory of transgender people who were killed due to transphobic violence. TDOR was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The Archives has a variety of online resources to help users learn about the collections and the Medical Center’s history. One particularly great resource that we would like to highlight is digitized issues of Intercom.

On November 6th, the Medical Center Library was filled with joy and excitement as we welcomed back Stampede of Love and their beloved miniature horses, Lola and Kiwi! With over 400 attendees joining us, the atmosphere was lively and full of smiles as everyone had the chance to meet these adorable equine friends.

Attendees enjoyed taking photos with Lola and Kiwi, creating unforgettable memories. To add to the fun, we also had mini horse buttons (from our new button maker!) that everyone loved, making the day even more special.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this event! We can’t wait to see you again for more hoof-tapping fun in the future!

For the past three years, the Duke Medical Center Library & Archives has hosted a holiday book drive to benefit the Durham Public Schools (DPS) Hospital School library. This year, we’re inviting students, staff, and faculty to join us in making an even greater impact!

The DPS Hospital School serves children from preschool through 12th grade who are inpatients or outpatients at Duke University Hospital, bringing a sense of normalcy and joy to their lives.

Your donation will help expand the library’s collection with much-needed science books and popular new picture books, supporting year one of their five-year collection development plan.
