Health literacy is the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services to make appropriate health decisions (Healthy People 2010).

An estimated one in three Americans has limited health literacy. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this can impact an individual's ability to manage a chronic disease, care for themselves and understand instructions for taking medications.
