Medical Student Press Seeking Editorial Team Members

The Medical Student Press is a robust editorial service with multiple online platforms for the publishing projects of medical students. The editor in chief is a medical student at the University of Rochester, but the editorial team is cross-institutional. The group aims to improve the reach and quality of medical students' scholarly publications on a global scale. Their projects, run by a team of medical student editors with faculty guidance, operate using Open Journal Systems and support open-access publishing.

Executive Editor (application deadline: January 28, 2015): This role primes the student to take over as editor-in-chief pending a successful year as executive editor. Applicants must be first or second year medical students or MD/PhD students in their PhD years. The EE need have strong editorial and leadership qualities. Creativity and amibition are key to success within this role. The EE will have the opportunity to conduct high-profile faculty interviews and will serve as an administrator for all publications alongside the EIC. Executive team members also have a role in public relations and team organization. The MSPress Journal Associate Editor: Runs the MSPress Journal, a semiannual publication. This includes collaboration with editors and authors worldwide. A knowledge of the editorial needs for research articles, interview transcripts, case studies, and creative writing pieces is required. Executive team members also have a role in public relations and team organization. Free Clinic Research Collective Associate Editor: Runs the FCRC, a semiannual publication. Applicants need be involved with free clinic work and have a strong set of editorial skills. The associate editor is the driving proponent of this project (including publicity, project organization, and editing distribution). This is a huge opportunity and a fantastic way to not only edit but also be involved in supporting community health. Executive team members also have a role in public relations and team organization. The following roles are accepted on a rolling basis:

Editor: MSPress Editors work with the MSPress Blog, the MSPress Journal, and the Free Clinic Research Collective under the direction of their respective Associate Editors. Editors will only be assigned one piece to edit at a time unless they choose to extend their responsibilities. Editors correspond directly with authors and peer reviewers, ensuring the progression of their assigned pieces. Writer: MSPress Writers contribute one piece monthly to the MSPress Blog. You can choose to have a themed blog, you can name your blog, or you can simply write posts without any specific theme. Peer Reviewer: MSPress Peer Reviewers are called upon during editing season for the MSPress Journal and the Free Clinic Research Collective. Peer Reviewers are given two weeks to review their assigned pieces. An average of two assignements per year should be expected. All medical students are qualified to serve as reviewers. CV and writing samples are not required.
